School catchment areas in the UK

A school catchment area is the area a school or council gives priority to when a school has more applicants than places. In England most state schools rank applicants by straight-line distance from home once children in care and siblings have been admitted, and some councils draw a fixed boundary instead. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each run their own systems. For a Year 7 place in England you apply to your home council by 31 October of Year 6.
